An ode to (one of) the greatest sports movies ever made, Slap Shot, at ESPN.com.
Speaking of Slap Shot, did you ever notice how many good sports movies there were in a five year window? Whenever any of these six are on one of my 783 channels, I am contractually obligated to stop and watch - and they were all made within a five-year period:
1976: Rocky and The Bad News Bears. 1977: Slap Shot. 1979: Breaking Away (Bloomington!). 1980: Caddyshack and Raging Bull.
Raging Bull and Breaking Away are the only two that didn't succumb to the lure of sequels, which ranged from entertaining to abysmal (in order of my favorite to least favorite): Rocky Balboa, Rocky III, Rocky II, Rocky IV, fhe Bad News Bears ('05 remake), The Bad News Bears Go To Japan, The Bad News Bears In Breaking Training, Caddyshack II, Rocky V, and whatever the Slap Shot straight-to-video monstrosity was called.Labels: Slap Shot
