Calves Non-Tendered
Well, the drama has happened. The Cubs evidently felt that Calves Prior wouldn't be back until around the All-Star Break. To be honest, I can't blame them for their skepticism. In today's market, I could have lived with the Cubs giving Prior $3.5 M for a year or two, just to see what would happen one last time.
Alas, it is done and we can all start customizing our Fukudome jerseys and forgetting about the pain Prior has caused us to endure. Because, as is the motto here at Wrigleyville23, it is all about us. Nothing more.
UPDATE:
HJE! has a fond and admirable take on Mark Prior's non-tender. I'll definitely remember that moment when he beaned Barry Bonds in San Francisco. And, I'll never forget how he was the hands down best pitcher in the league for the second half of 2003. But, on the same token, he was a bit of a sourpuss when it came to his injuries. It isn't Mark's fault that the knucklehead of a coach he had was Dusty Baker, who probably single-handedly ruined Prior's Cubs career.
You have to wonder, though...if Kerry Wood thinks enough of the Cubs and its fans to stick it out, feeling that he owes us the best pitching performances of his career yet to come, then why can't Mark Prior ante up and do the same? I will remember Mark for all the good he did in a Cubs uniform, but I'll be trying my best to not let the bad cloud that judgement too much. I wish Prior all the luck, and I hope he can get healthy and have a productive career.
