Kerry Wood, Closer?
I cannot begin to say how much I want this to end up being a happy story.

Wood will be fun as a closer, especially since he gives the Cubs their first "oh shit, here he comes" closer in years - someone who makes the other team know they have to win the game in 8 innings instead of 9.

Marmol is closer. Better stuff.Woody gives up too many homers to be the closer. He'll blow too many saves. He's a better long-relief, set-up man and occasional starter.

Are you taking crazy pills? Do you not remember how "reliable" Kerry's been since coming into the league years ago?Kerry's best bet is as a closer. For now, anyway. He will get his one inning in. He's still scaring the pants off the opposition, and he was touching 96-97 yesterday. He made it look easy.I agree that Marmol has good stuff. Better? I don't know. I think Wood has learned how to pitch rather than just throw hard. Plus, having him closing is better for Wood AND the Cubs, even though I agree that Marmol would do just as well.

Sorry, had a couple typos...What I basically said is that Wood doesn't HAVE to pitch in a closer's role, he can have the attitude of "Fuck It And Chuck It", which is more his style.

Nutsack - apologize to anonymous for calling him/her crazy.that said, i like marmol in his role last year - coming in and shutting things down in the 6th or 7th or whenever as the starters wear down. he is very good at that and an argument could be made that he was the most valuable player on the team because of it.would he be a good closer? one woudl think so, and he still will be if kerry isn't suited for it or he breaks again.but kerry should never, ever start again. ever.
