Carlos Marmol Is Confused
Wrigleyville23 has a pretty strict no-booing policy when it comes to home teams, but this caused some chuckling at the WV23 world headquarters:
Do Cubs fans expect Marmol to be perfect every time out? "I think so," he said. "Last time I was there they were booing me. I don't know why."
Let's see. You blew a five-run lead, singlehandedly destroying the Cubs debut of the team's new star pitcher who had just struck out 10 in just over five innings.
That, and you had put up a 13.50 ERA while allowing a .297 BA and .490 OBP in your last 12 appearances.
That's probably why, though it's just a guess.

By the way, Lou's reaction to Carlos' meltdown that afternoon was another reason why I have a man-crush on our manager. After a win, Lou rarely can be bothered to remember how the team scored or who got a big hit. "Ah, hell, we won. That's all I care about." After that game, however, Lou pointed out that Marmol's poor decision to try and make a spectacular play on the little infield hit to get the lead runner at the plate -- instead of slowing down and taking the sure out at first -- was the sole reason behind the big inning. "Outs are your friend at that point of the game..." Lou said. "We TEACH our ball club that." He went on to soften and give some praise to Marmol as well, but he made it clear that he was still fuming over that one play. And he was right. Get that out, and the Cubs win 7-4. It's hard to give up five runs in the ninth without getting hit hard or giving up a big HR unless you give the opponent an extra out. I appreciate having a manager who gets all foggy when it comes to the good stuff, but can hone in like a laser beam on dumb plays and bad habits that can get the club beat.
