Cubs Have Harden In Mind With CC Gone?
I would be unspeakably happy - and even more nervous - if the Cubs were to trade for Rich Harden. He breaks as much as Wood or Prior, though not as severely.
The above link is screwy, but here is the relevant part:
The Cubs have spent a lot of time on the phone recently with Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane trying to pry away right-hander Rich Harden. Expect the phone lines to start burning a little hotter beginning today.
Beane's in a tough spot. This season was supposed to be about rebuilding -- at least, that's what he told us last winter after dealing pitcher Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks and outfielder Nick Swisher to the White Sox for a combined nine prospects, including five starting pitchers. Then the A's -- even after dropping two straight to the White Sox over the weekend -- made a run in the watered-down AL West, sitting six games behind the fragile Los Angeles Angels.
Now seems like a bad time for Beane to pull the trigger, no matter how much the Cubs call.
Waiting for Harden could last right up to the July 31 non-waivers trade deadline. Thanks to the second consecutive solid outing by left-hander Sean Marshall on Sunday during a 7-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Cubs can afford a little patience.

I do not want to hear the name "Randy Wolf" one more time as a "potential trade target" for this team. No. Thanks. Why did Gallagher move to the pen? That seems pretty asinine. He's not good in the bullpen. We know this. This was not a part of Operation Seans at all.

If any team knows how to deal with fragile righties, it's the Cubs.Too bad he'll cost more than Sabathia did in terms of prospects.

Which is great news considering the Cubs have squat to offer.Did you see the TBS telecast of the Cubs/Cardinals game yesterday? Chip was clamouring over how the Cubs farm system is now hammering out prospects. He actually named Rich Hill and Mike Fontenot.

matt - while he has another year (i think), the cubs and others would most certainly have to take a pass. this year is the healthiest he's ever been, and he has still been on the DL.

And Beane wants a "Haren haul" for Harden. I think the A's got the #22 and #36 overall prospects from Arizona for Haren, along with about 5 other guys (including Dana Eveland who is throwing well for them).I don't see anyone paying anything near that for Harden. Too risky.Bedard would be less expensive and less risky, but only slightly.

bedard i'm not sure about, but who knows. burnett still seems like it could work, if they're going to move him.

Burnett would seem to make the most sense. He breaks too, though. Plus he can choose not to opt out of his contract if he really sucks, meaning the team that trades for him is stuck with him for another 2 years, if I'm not mistaken.

Knowing the Cubs, they'll probably trade for somebody who's name hasn't ever come up yet. Like, Zack Greinke. Which I would be fine with.
