I Miss Brewers Fans

Since the Cubs haven't played the Brewers in a long time, I thought we would take the off day to look back at some of the insight we've been missing from our friends from up north the last few weeks - and give us something to look forward to when Milwaukee fans make their way back over.*

I started thinking about these comments on Saturday after the power-mad bosses at Brew Crew Ball banned Cubs fans after two or three comments, none of which were particularly hostile. Banning makes me sad.

Anyway, these are actual comments from actual readers - none of whom would ever be banned for visiting. Because we believe in America. And cheese curds. And we find them kinda cute, in a Henery Hawk sort of way.

kpanz, 4/1/08: "Why Marmol isn't the closer for the cubs is absolutely beyond me. He is by far the best reliever on the squad. But then again Piniella is so wise isn't he?"

This, presumably, is why kpanz wasn't named manager of the Cubs before the 2007 season.

zeek, 4/1/08: "A club that has been around for 100yrs. with nothing to show for it-- that's the definition of irrelevant."

Um, nope. It may be an example of irrelevance, but it is not the actual definition of irrelevant. See? irrelevant - not relevant; not applicable or pertinent:

Oak Creek Anonymous, 4/2/08: "Brewers 2-0; Cubs 0-2. Brewers fans are not taking this as anything more than 2 games. Unlike you Cubs fans. Sorry hayseeds, but the truth hurts."

Yes, we're still smarting over that zinger.

Oak Creek Anonymous, 4/4/08: "How are the Cubs doing this year? How is Prince doing this year? How are the Brewers doing this year? Now STFU ladies."

In order of your queries: The Cubs are doing fine, thank you for asking. Not as well as in previous years. Not bad, but not great. And we still don't have any ladies on staff, though IAN is in charge of finding us an intern.

zeek, 4/9/2008, taking things very personally when we call Prince Fielder fat (again): "Soooooooo (sic), what's your point??"

The point, as always, was that Prince Fielder is fat.

* Not including Matt, Brad and Goldy, who stop by regularly and politely.

I went to school behind the cheddar curtain WV so I have alot of experience with Brewers fans. What I have really come to understand is that the Brewers are nothing but filler as Wisconsin fans prepare for the Packers. Once training camp starts these guys only care about the Pack. Thus you will rarely get a real baseball discussion with a Brewer fan. It's like talking soccer with a Cubs fan.

Are you lookig for an intern like the one Kramer got for Kramerica industries? To be honest, I think the "Once football season comes around, nobody cares about baseball in Wisconsin" thing is a myth. Last year is proof that if the Brewers have a team that is in the hunt come August people care. Of course people love football here. The NFL is the most popular sport in the country. So yah, casual fans will pay less attention as the NFL season gears up. Most sports fans in Wisconsin care about more than the Packers sporting wise. Heck, I would take a winless Packer season in exchange for a Brewers play-off spot. The people that only care about the Packers look much like those in the Brett Favre rally photo.

I think the "Once football season comes around, nobody cares about baseball in Wisconsin" thing is a myth. Goldy, It has been 13 years since I lived in the great state of Wisconsin. So maybe my opinion of this is outdated. Most sports fans in Wisconsin care about more than the Packers sporting wise.Yeah they care about Badger football. Just kidding. When I was in Wisconsin it was football, football, football. According to what you say, it sounds like this has changed and that's great.

Come to think about it, I was in Madison over the 4th and saw more Brewers gear than I ever remember on the streets. Looks like the old state of Wisconsin is enjoying a winning club. Well done.

The Brewer gear is certainly in full force this summer. Wisconsin is starving for a winning baseball team. As for the Pack, yeah, they will always be king. They're an institution, not unlike the Crimson Tide in Alabama, Jayhawks hoops in Kansas, and Srikeouts in Bill Hall's bat.

"I Miss Brewers Fans"I'll bet you do WV. We dumb bratheads from the Northland drive your site numbers up. Other than what's-their-names, Nutball and Maddick, not too many other "regulars" round here.

Funny, do you have access to our site meter? This is the second time you've mentioned our low traffic numbers.

CCD - I can see where you are coming from based on the timeframe you were in Wisconsin. At that point, the Packers had been crap since the glory days of the 60's. For many, it ws the first time the Packers were good in our lifetime. Plus, with the internet picking up steam, it was much easier to get info about your favorite sports team. The Brewers were terrible, the Bucks were terrible, Wisconsin basketball had not arrived yet, Badger football was in a lull between the rose bowls and only Marquette alumni care about the golden eagles. So really, the Packers were the only thing the local sporting world had going at that time. And as Brad said, the Packers will always be king in Wisconsin, but I think the thoughts that everything else ceases to exist once September rolls around isn't true any more.

They gave up four prospects, including their best, for a rent-a-player who will be gone after 13 starts, give or take. So, we Cub fans won't really have to listen to them for too much longer anyway.Playoffs or (then) Bust!!

graham, far be it from me to stick up for the Brewers (I can't say that I hate them--not like how I hate the Cardinals and Reds), but they gave up probably their most MLB-ready prospect for CheeseCurds. Now, they do have a pretty stacked minor league system. I believe Matt Gamel is the kid's name who may be set to take over 3B in the near future. I'm not so sure as to their pitching prospects, but they do have a few up and coming hitters in Milwaukee.

I love it when a few hundred Brewers "fans" (for all of 14 months now!) show up in their newly-purchased hats at Wrigley and act like it's some kind of hostile takeover of the place, as if it cancels out Cub fans swarming Miller Park by the thousands over the years (and even though Cards, Reds and Astros fans all regularly show up in Wrigleyville in greater numbers...)They're almost cute.(As I've said before, I'm happy for the 7-10K Brewer diehards that showed up at the House that Selig Built every night when the team was crappy all those years. The majority of the douchebags who just started showing up last year and go around trash-talking or acting like they live and die with the team can bite my ass. They haven't earned that. Reminds me of Colts fans.)

Colts fans? As an Indianapolis native and former season ticket holder, I must note the place has been sold out for basically a decade. You may have been able to say that 7 or 8 years ago, but it makes little sense at this point.Alas, it sounds like leftover sour grapes from a Bears fan.

Yes, Colts fans.Went to college down that way and lived in the Indy metro area briefly during the mid-90s. Even after going to the AFC Championship game in '95, you still couldn't give Colts tickets away in that town. (I know, I tried, as it was part of my job at a radio station). Indy fans are some of the biggest bandwagon jumpers on the planet. Look at Pacers attendance over the years. Same goes for the Colts. The second that Peyton retires, that new building will be half-empty every Sunday again. (And selling out a building that's 6,000 seats smaller than any other NFL facility ain't no great shakes, either).Say what you will about the Bears, but the last non-sellout at either new or old Soldier Field was four or five years before the Colts stole their team away from Baltimore...

so ... what you're saying is: demand goes up as quality goes up; demand goes down as quality goes down. that's a very odd concept, especially in a smaller market.either way: colts 29, bears 17.one other thing: the colts did not "steal" the franchise from baltimore. the colts franchise was the colts franchise. and they left, because the economic situation was not sustainable for the franchise. they wouldn't build a stadium - and attendance was horrendous in baltimore. look it up.
