Cubs Rumor Mill: Jake Peavy, Take 2

What could drag the Jake Peavy talks into President-elect Obama's third term? Involving the Orioles, which the Baltimore Sun says has happened:

The Orioles have revisited trade talks with the Chicago Cubs about multi-tool outfielder Felix Pie, according to industry sources, and could end up as the third team in a three-way deal that would send marquee right-hander Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres to Chicago.

Pie, once considered one of the better young prospects in the game, was an Orioles' target at this time last year when the two teams discussed a deal involving two-time All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts.

Sources said that the Cubs are looking for a young pitcher in return with one possible scenario being the Orioles sending starter Garrett Olson to Chicago, who then could trade the left-hander to the Padres as part of a package for Peavy. Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail is reluctant to trade his young pitching, but the Orioles have long been enamored by Pie's potential and tools.

MacPhail said today that a deal is not imminent, but did acknowledge that Pie is the kind of player the Orioles are pursuing to broaden the club's position depth.

May as well make Roberts part of this to ensure nothing ever happens.

The Orioles may be involved in the deal but why would they want Pie? Isn't Adam Jones their guy in center? If they acquired Pie it would be as a 4th outfielder which makes me wonder what they would give up of value. It seems to me that it would make more sense that Pie would be going to San Diego if he is involved in this deal.

Pie would play LF for the Orioles.

Does Pie have the power to play a corner outfield spot in the AL? I hope MacFAIL thinks so, cause I don't.

He doesn't have the power to play a corner outfield spot in a traditional sense and may not even be good enough to play at all though his minor league numbers suggest otherwise. What you lose in offense you generally pick up in defense when shifting players around, or vice versa. Pie would be a significantly better defender in LF and make up for the lack of offense if he can hit at a reasonable level. Also, it's a low risk move for the O's. You trade away a pitcher you don't think can succeed for a player with high upside and put him in LF. If that player succeeds you can then turn around and trade him in a year or two for an impact player when the team is more ready to contend.
