it's probably the right thing to do. they need to re-sign dempster, need to acquire an OF bat. only so much money...

I don't know what Kerry's demands were, but he finally shows up and lasts an entire year and then Hendry decides to kick us in the cods like this.I'll take the wins and a Series title if they come, but I'll miss the hell out of Kerry Wood.

either first-rounders (if it's a team in the latter half of the draft order) or sandwich picks, i think.

Emotion says this was the wrong way to go.Intelligent thoughts say this was probably best. Especially if he wanted 3-4 yrs guaranteed. It will still suck seeing him on another team..

Assuming the Cubs offer Wood arbitration and he declines, which is what will happen, the Cubs will get 2 compensatory draft picks. One of them will be from the team who signs him. If that team drafts in the top half of the 2008 draft, the pick the Cubs get would be in the 2nd round. If it's a team that drafts in the latter half of the first round that signs Wood the Cubs will get their 1st round pick.Along with that they also get a supplemental draft pick (sandwich pick as WV referred to it) between rounds 1 and rounds 2. The order of the supplemental picks are determined by the Elias rankings. If Wood somehow ended up being the highest ranking player to leave (nearly impossible) the Cubs would get the first pick after the first round ends. It's more likely they'll get a pick around spot number 37 or 40. Here's to hoping that one of the better teams in 2008 signs Kerry Wood, which is probably what will happen. That way the Cubs get that team's 1st round pick and then they get their own pick in the 1st round and a supplemental pick between rounds 1 and 2. the Cubs will most likely get 3 of the first 40 picks. If they were to be smart once again and let Dempster walk they would probably end up with 5 of the first 40 picks and if they were smart and offered Howry arbitration they would have 6 picks unless Howry accepted, which he might do so there's a risk with him. You can rebuild a farm system in one or two drafts like this and it's how teams like the Twins, A's and Red Sox always have a good farm system. Let Dempster walk, take the 2 draft picks and then sign Lowe. Unfortunately by signing Lowe the Cubs would then give away one of their first round picks to the Dodgers. So, let's say the Cubs offer arbitration to all 3 Type A (Wood and Dempster) and B (Howry) free agents and then sign Lowe. They'd have 5 picks among the first 45-50 picks in the draft and will have gotten no worse in the bullpen (Gregg is almost as good as Wood), saved nearly $6-8 million, and have 4 additional picks before the 2nd round. That's exactly how good teams operate. As much as I like Kerry Wood, this was a great move by the Cubs. You can't justify spending $12 million per year on a closer when you have Marmol who is better than Wood making league minimum, not to mention the other power arms the Cubs have for the bullpen like Samardzija, Ascanio, Guzman and Hart. This is both a sad day and a great day for Cubs fans. It's sad because Woody is gone, but it's a great day because this is perhaps the smartest thing I've ever seen the Cubs do with regards to player personnel.

What concerns me is that they let Wood go so they can give Ryan Dempster a 4 year deal for $50 million or more. I heard Hendry on the radio this afternoon saying that Wood can get more years and money elsewhere and it wouldn't be in Kerry's best interest to take less from the Cubs. He also said that they are still interested in trying to get a deal done with Ryan Dempster. Dempster had a career year and I don't expect him to be worth the kind of money he is going to get. So, I actually would have rather they re-signed Wood and let Dempster walk and it looks like Hendry is doing the opposite. I also believe Lowe is a better option than Demp.

i'd definitely prefer 3 years of lowe to 4 years of dempsters. just not sure it's an option at this point?
