With the news that Kevin Gregg may be re-signing with the Marlins after a year in Chicago, it's a useful time to look back on the trade that brought Gregg to the Cubs.
In an offseason of unpopular moves (Mark DeRosa traded, Milton Bradley signed), it was perhaps the most unpopular of all because it meant Kerry Wood was on the way out of town after 11 seasons with the Cubs. It was made even worse because the Cubs then didn't offer arbitration to Wood because they feared he would accept it.
Emotions cooled, even though Gregg was mediocre at best as a Cub, eventually losing the closer job to Carlos Marmol. It helped somewhat that Woody didn't set the world on fire in Cleveland.

Does anyone remember what the Cubs gave up for one year of Gregg? That's right, hard-throwing youngster Jose Ceda - leading one Bleacher Report "senior analyst" to declare the Marlins had stolen Ceda from the Cubs.
Perhaps. But this hasn't been much of an issue in the last year, either, because Ceda didn't throw a pitch for the Marlins or their farm system due to a shoulder injury. In fact, he had shoulder surgery for a torn labrum, which come standard with Cubs pitchers.
But he's back and could be competing for a bullpen job with ... Kevin Gregg:
"He's totally healthy," Marlins vice president of player development and scouting Jim Fleming told MLB.com. "We're very pleased with where he's at. The injury is resolved."
For what it's worth, Ceda is not listed among Baseball America's top 10 Marlins prospects.
