Let's Send All Starters To The Bullpen!

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs

Phil Rogers needs to stop typing everything he thinks, or the Trib needs to hire some editors. Preferably both.

From today's gem of a column:

Dempster could turn a bad bullpen into a good one, if he's up for such a seemingly downward move in the second year of his four-year contract. The seventh and eighth innings are huge for a pitching staff, and the Cubs badly need help. Dempster makes sense in this role, which is no reflection on his work as a starter. He has had six quality starts yet the Cubs have gone 2-6 behind him. He could be more valuable in one- and two-inning doses in front of Marmol.

So much wrong in so few words.

Because the Cubs have gone 2-6 behind him despite six quality starts, Rogers believes Dempster is more valuable holding those leads or keeping games close that the bullpen keeps screwing up.

Brilliant! Except you're removinga starter who is giving the team those quality starts - leaving Dempster (or any other relever) with potentially less to hold.

But let's assume Rogers has a point and Dempster is more valuable in "one- and two-inning doses" a few times a week rather than pitching once every five days.

Wouldn't the same logic apply to the full rotation? Lilly, Silva, Z, Gorz and Dempster should all be pitching one- and two-inning doses throughout the week, no?

Or maybe it's just a dumb idea. Either way.

Update: One other glaring phrase I missed the first time around: "if he's up for such a seemingly downward move."

Do you think Phil Rogers would write such a thing about, say, Carlos Zambrano? That it's only a good idea "if he's up for it"?

I thought in Phil's world players were supposed to do whatever the skip asks, for the good of the team, while rubbing some dirt in it?
